New version of PoiEdit 2007 (2007.2) is released. This release fixes the dreaded TomTom bug where all the category names were being mangled. Click here to go to the downloads page. What is PoiEdit AutoUpdate? Wat is PoiEdit AutoUpdate?

The AutoUpdate feature of PoiEdit makes it possible to update poi files from the internet on your computer or Mobile Device. Fully automatically every time you click "AutoUpdate Now" or even whenever you connect your device!

The poi files are offered by dedicated poi sites (go to the list of poi sites), most of which are offering the poi files for free (some require you to register before you can AutoUpdate their items. See also: How do I use the AutoUpdate feature? Hoe gebruik ik de AutoUpdate mogelijkheid?

You have to setup which files you want to download from which site, and also what the locations (i.e. which directory on the computer or Mobile device) of AutoUpdate files are. Some sites require user/password authorization, you have to fill in this information too. The section explains how to do it...

Open the AutoUpdate Manager from PoiEdit using menu AutoUpdate|AutoUpdate Manager. Select a site from the left-top list of available sites to find out what kind of poi files it has to offer. The first time you do this, PoiEdit will want to download the up-to-date poi file information from that site, please let it do so. After a few seconds you will see a list of maps, groups and poi files appears. Use these to navigate through the poi files the site has to offer. The Auth column in the poi file list will indicate what level of authorization is required to download the file:

If you've made sure you are authorized to download poi files, you can mark them for auto-updating by selecting the poi file or poi files and clicking the +PDA button for Mobile ActiveSync devices (PocketPC or Smart Phone) or the +Local button for syncing local files on your PC (or GPS systems that require you to download the files on your PC before importing them to the GPS system using some kind of tool that the manufacturer of the GPS has provided). You will see a dialog from which you can select the location where you the poi file(s) to be saved when they are synchronized. If you've selected the +PDA button, make sure you've connected your Mobile Device, else you will get an error message. If one or more files with the same name already exist in the specified location, you will be asked if it is ok to overwrite them.

When you're all done you can try syncing the files you've setup by clicking the AutoUpdate Now button. You can initiate the AutoUpdate from the main PoiEdit window as well, either by menu AutoUpdate|AutoUpdate Now or by pressing key F9. You can also start syncing by using the tray icon of PoiEdit or even more automatically by setting PoiEdit up to start AutoUpdating as soon as you insert your Mobile Device.

More advanced users can start the AutoUpdater using a scheduler of some kind, see " Can I start AutoUpdate from (Windows) scheduler or other programs? Kan ik AutoUpdate starten vanuit een (Windows) taakplanner of andere programma's? " for more details on that subject.

Installer says I'm not logged in as an administrator... Het installatieprogramma beweert dat ik niet ben ingelogd als beheerder...

The installation program checks if you are logged in as an administrator before it continues the installation. It does this because some features cannot be setup properly if you do not start the installation under administrator rights. Two things may cause this: 1) You are really not logged in as an administrator. You can login as an administrator by pressing ctrl+alt+del twice in the logon screen (Windows XP) and entering Administrator as the user name and the administrator password as entered during the installation of Windows. 2) You are logged in as an administrator, but the installation does not detect this as such. This problem has been reported a few times, and the cause is yet to be discovered. However, you can continue the setup without problems (just click "No" when asked to quit the installation), the only thing the setup will not do is enable the "AutoUpdate upon device connect" (which you can turn on later within the application), and neither will it install the AutoPlay handlers which cause PoiEdit to AutoUpdate when an usb drive is connected. Apart from these 2 items, the installation will correctly install PoiEdit without limitations.

Het installatieprogramma controleert of je als beheerder bent ingelogt alvorens met de installatie te beginnen. Het doet dit omdat sommige mogelijkheden niet goed kunnen worden inegesteld als de installatie niet onder beheerrechten wordt uitgevoerd. Er kunnen 2 oorzaken zijn: 1) Je bent daadwerkelijk niet ingelogd als beheerder. Je kunt je als beheerder inloggen door tweemaal ctrl+alt+del te toetsen in het inlogscherm van Windows XP en als gebruikernaam Beheerder in te voeren en als wachtwoord het wachtwoord dat is ingesteld tijdens het installeren van Windows. 2) Je bent als beheerder ingelogd, maar de installatie detecteert dit niet als zodanig. Dit probleem is reeds een paar keer gemeld, echter is er nog geen oplossing voor gevonden. Echter, je kunt in dit geval de installatie zonder problemen voortzetten (klik "Nee" op de vraag de installatie af te sluiten), het enige dat de installate dan niet zal kunnen doen is het instellen van de optie "AutoUpdaten bij verbinden apparaat" (deze optie kun je later in het programma zelf altijd aanzetten) en het installeren van de AutoPlay handlers welke ervoor zorgen dat de AutoUpdate wordt gestart indien een usb apparaat wordt aangesloten. Afgezien van deze 2 items, wordt de installatie volledig en zonder verdere beperkingen uitgevoerd.

I'm getting an invalid username/password error when AutoUpdating from a site! Ik krijg foutmeldingen over ongeldige gebruikersnaam/wachtwoord wanneer ik AutoUpdate vanaf een site!

Some sites only allow you to download certain poi's when you are registered to that site. In that case you need to fill in you username (on some sites this is your email address) and password in the AutoUpdate manager, using the Set/Change Password button. If you can't remember your username and/or password, please, only refer to that update site for instructions.

How can I publish my own AutoIpdate poi site? Hoe kan ik mijn eigen AutoUpdate poi site publiceren?

In it simplest form, you'll have to publish a xml file on your website which contains an entry for every poi-file you wish to publish. The file will have to follow the format of the example below, taken from my own published xml file on http://www.dnote.nl/pois.xml.

If you're getting errors like "Unable to start application" from Windows upon connecting your ActiveSync device, or AutoUpdate does not start at all, the startup settings in the registry are probably corrupted or missing. You can reapply these settings by going to the AutoUpdate Manager, Settings tab and uncheck and recheck the setting "Update upon ActiveSync connect" if you're using an ActiveSync device and/or "Update upon USB connect" when you are using a USB drive device (f.e. Garmin Nüvi, or an USB stick you keep your poi's on):

I cannot use or want to use Internet Explorer, but PoiEdit seems to use it to download online information, as I'm getting errors while AutoUpdateing... Ik kan of wil Internet Explorer niet gebruiken. Due to many problems users were getting using the old download engine inside PoiEdit, it was decided (from v3.8) to use the Internet Explorer download engine instead. This assures that if you have a working Internet Explorer, PoiEdit is also working properly. A small downside to this is that if you cannot use Internet Explorer (e.g. due to company policy), it is possible that PoiEdit will also fail to download and do AutoUpdates.

Vanwege de vele problemen die gebruikers ondervonden bij het gebruiken van de oude download functies in PoiEdit, is er besloten (vanaf v3.8) om in plaats daarvan de download functies van Internet Explorer te gebruiken. You get this message when starting up Pocket PoiEdit and have not yet transferred the AutoUpdate settings from PoiEdit on the PC to the mobile device. You solve this problem by sending the settings from PoiEdit on the PC using the AutoUpdate Manager (tab All Items/Pocket PoiEdit -> Send selected items to Pocket PoiEdit).

Je zie deze foutmelding indien je Pocket PoiEdit opstart terwijl je de AutoUpdate instellingen noet niet vanaf PoiEdit op de PC hebt overgezet naar je mobiele apparaat. Je lost het probleem op door de instellinge vanaf PoiEdit op de PC te verzenden middel de AutoUpdate Manager (tab Alle Items/Pocket PoiEdit -> Verzend selectie naar Pocket PoiEdit).

Yes, PoiEdit features a few command line options which you can use to control PoiEdit externally:
/tray
Tells PoiEdit to stay hidden in the tray of the Windows Task Bar
/update
Tells PoiEdit AutoUpdate all items
/silent
Tells PoiEdit to hide dialogs that might appear from errors during the AutoUpdate or overwrite file prompts (files will always be overwritten in /silent mode)

A typical command line that you could use in a scheduler would be:
"c:\Program Files\Dnote Software\Poi Edit\PoiEdit.exe" /tray /update /silent (the exact path depends on how you installed PoiEdit).
